Most jewelry cleaning advice online falls into one of two categories: dangerously vague ("use a soft cloth") or confidently wrong ("toothpaste works great on silver").
Neither is useful. This is the complete guide — what actually works, why it works, and what will damage your pieces if you try it.
The Daily Habit That Prevents Almost Everything
Before cleaning methods, there is one habit worth establishing: wipe your jewelry with a soft dry cloth after every wear.
Thirty seconds. A microfibre cloth, a dedicated jewelry cloth, or the pouch your Orvelli32 piece arrived in. This removes skin oils, sweat, and surface particles before they have time to react with the metal. It is the single most effective thing you can do for your jewelry — and it eliminates the need for deep cleaning in most cases.
If you do nothing else in this guide, do this.
Light Cleaning — for All Pieces
When wiping is not enough, the standard method works for most jewelry: sterling silver, gold-plated pieces, and pieces with most stones.
What you need: a small bowl, lukewarm water, one drop of mild unscented dish soap, a very soft toothbrush — a baby toothbrush is ideal — and a soft lint-free cloth.
The process: place the piece in the soapy water for 30 to 60 seconds. For gold-plated pieces, no longer — extended soaking accelerates plating wear. Use the toothbrush to clean gently around settings, chain links, and any detailed areas where oil and debris accumulate. Rinse thoroughly under clean lukewarm water, ensuring no soap residue remains in settings. Pat dry immediately with the cloth. Do not leave pieces to air dry — water spots form, and standing water near stone settings can loosen adhesives over time. Allow to dry completely before storing.
This method handles most cleaning needs. Use it weekly or whenever you notice a piece looking dull.
Tarnish Removal — Sterling Silver Specifically
Sterling silver tarnishes. This is chemistry, not failure — silver reacts with sulphur compounds in the air to form a grey or black surface film. The silver beneath is intact. Tarnish is reversible.
When the light cleaning method is not enough, two options:
Polishing cloth — a jeweller's polishing cloth contains micro-abrasives that remove tarnish without damaging the metal surface. Use it in straight lines, not circles. Do not use a polishing cloth on gold-plated pieces — the abrasive will wear the plating unevenly. Also avoid on pieces with intentional oxidisation — the deliberate dark finish in recessed areas will be removed along with the tarnish.
Aluminium foil method — line a bowl with aluminium foil, add one tablespoon of baking soda, and pour in enough hot water to cover the piece. Place the silver so it is in contact with the foil. An electrochemical reaction transfers the silver sulphide (the tarnish compound) from the silver to the foil. Leave for one to three minutes, remove, rinse thoroughly under clean water, and dry immediately.
This method works because tarnish is a reversible chemical reaction. You are not removing material from the silver — you are moving the sulphide compound. The silver emerges clean and bright.
Important: do not use the foil method on pieces with glued stones, enamel details, or intentional dark oxidisation. For those, the damp cloth is the only safe option.
Restoring Cubic Zirconia Brilliance
CZ accumulates a film of skin oils, soap residue, and lotion that gradually reduces its brilliance. The stone itself is unchanged — it simply needs the film removed.
Soak in warm soapy water for five to ten minutes. Use a soft brush on the stone surface and around the setting. Rinse thoroughly. Dry with a lint-free cloth. The brilliance returns immediately and completely. This is one of the advantages of CZ — it responds perfectly to cleaning and returns to its original appearance without exception.
Stone-Specific Care
Amethyst — safe in water, responds well to the standard light cleaning method. Store away from prolonged direct sunlight.
Onyx — brief water exposure is fine. Use the standard method. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasives.
Malachite — clean with a dry cloth only. Never submerge. No soap, no water, no chemicals. The stone's low hardness and sensitivity to acids mean even mild exposure causes damage over time.
Enamel — wipe with a damp cloth. No abrasives. No ultrasonic cleaners. Enamel is glass-based and bonds to metal — vibration from ultrasonic cleaners can stress this bond.
What Never to Use
Toothpaste — commonly recommended, actively harmful. It is mildly abrasive by design, which removes tarnish but also scratches soft metal surfaces and stone facets. The scratches are too small to see immediately and accumulate over time.
Baking soda paste — same problem as toothpaste. Abrasive. Not safe for plated pieces or stones.
Bleach or household chemical cleaners — corrosive to most metals and many stones. There is no situation in which these are appropriate for jewelry.
Ultrasonic cleaners — safe for solid metal and some hard stones. Not safe for gold-plated pieces (the vibration accelerates plating wear), enamel (stresses the bond), or softer stones including malachite.
Boiling water — sometimes recommended for diamonds. Not appropriate for any of the materials in the Orvelli32 collection. Thermal shock can stress stone settings and loosen adhesives.
The Standard That Tells You Everything
If a cleaning method requires you to be careful about damaging the piece, it is probably the wrong method for that piece. The right method for each material is the one that removes what should be removed and leaves everything else intact.
When in doubt: soft cloth first. Then warm soapy water. Then ask a jeweller.
