Cubic zirconia is one of the most misrepresented materials in the jewelry industry. It appears in product descriptions as "crystal," "diamanté," "white stone," "brilliant cut stone" — almost anything except its actual name.
We call it cubic zirconia. Here is why that matters, and here is what it actually is.
What Cubic Zirconia Is
Cubic zirconia — CZ — is a synthesised crystalline material: zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂) stabilised in its cubic form. First synthesised in 1937, it became commercially produced for the jewelry market in the late 1970s. It is manufactured, not mined. It is consistent, clean, and optically precise.
CZ is not a fake diamond. It is a completely different material with its own chemical composition, its own physical properties, and its own identity. The comparison exists because CZ's optical properties — refractive index, light dispersion, brilliance — are visually similar to diamond. But diamond is carbon. CZ is zirconium dioxide. They are not the same material with different price tags.
What It Does
CZ has a hardness of 8–8.5 on the Mohs scale — harder than most natural semi-precious stones. Its light dispersion is actually higher than diamond, meaning it produces more spectral colour ("fire") under direct light. Its refractive index makes it optically brilliant in a way that glass cannot replicate.
It is also stable, durable, and responds perfectly to cleaning. A film of oil and soap that accumulates over time and reduces brilliance is fully reversed by a 10-minute soak in warm soapy water. The stone returns to its original appearance completely.
Why We Use It
Because some pieces are about light. CZ delivers light — precisely, reliably, and at a price that does not require the piece to be priced out of daily wear.
We do not use CZ as a substitute for something better. We use it because it is the correct material for the design intent: maximum optical brilliance in a minimal setting, worn by someone who chose the piece for what it does, not for what it costs.
Why We Name It
Because honesty is non-negotiable. A brand that calls CZ "crystal" is asking you to be confused rather than informed. We would rather you know exactly what you are buying and choose it because it is genuinely good.
