Why Does Jewelry Tarnish? What Is Actually Happening

Tarnish is not damage. It is chemistry.

Tarnish feels like failure. A piece that arrived bright and clean has turned grey or black, apparently ruined. It is not ruined. It is oxidised. The distinction matters because one is permanent and one is not.

What Tarnish Actually Is

Sterling silver reacts with hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere — compounds produced by air pollution, certain foods, rubber, wool, and even some skin secretions — to form silver sulphide (Ag₂S). This compound is dark grey to black and appears as a film on the surface of the silver.

This is not corrosion in the destructive sense. Rust — iron oxide — eats into metal and causes structural damage. Silver sulphide sits on the surface. The silver beneath it is completely intact. Remove the sulphide, and the silver is as it was.

Tarnish is reversible. Always.

Why Some Pieces Tarnish Faster Than Others

The rate of tarnishing varies by person and environment. High skin acidity, frequent sweating, hormonal changes, and certain medications all affect how quickly silver tarnishes on contact with a specific person's skin. Urban air, coastal humidity, and storage in open or humid spaces all accelerate it.

A piece that tarnishes quickly on you is not a defective piece. It is a chemically active one in your specific context. The response is adjustment — more frequent cleaning, better storage, or keeping the piece away from your skin in high-sweat situations.

How to Reverse It

A jeweller's polishing cloth handles light tarnish in seconds. For heavier tarnish, the aluminium foil and baking soda method transfers the sulphide compound off the silver through an electrochemical reaction — without abrasives, without chemicals, without removing any silver.

Both methods work because they address what tarnish actually is: a surface compound, not a material change.

What Prevents It

Dry storage in a sealed container. A silica gel sachet to absorb humidity. Wiping the piece with a dry cloth after every wear. Removing it before exercise, swimming, and situations of high sweat.

None of these prevent tarnishing entirely — silver is a reactive metal and the atmosphere contains sulphur. But they slow the process considerably.

A piece that tarnishes is a piece that is real. Polish it. It will be bright again before you put it on.
